My grass is all dead and mostly crab grass. What is the best thing to do to get it back green and full again? When is the best time to do something?

Crab grass is a b*tch.

To be honest with you, the best thing to do is to pull out as much as you can and then apply some crab grass preventer.

Call one of the lawn care services. Ask them for a quote. Crabgrass is a real b* as Cole said! And since it's not a little patch, good luck pulling it all. Maybe you could rip it all out, buy some fill if needed, and start over?

You should see my lawn...the weeds grow sooooooo well. Lawns don't do well in S.W.Florida unless you water and fertilize them constantly. My last water/sewer bill was $46 with out watering anything. My inlaws water their lawn and they pay a $260 a month water/sewer bill. I'll stick with weeds until I find some awesome drought tolerant grass.

Oy . . . If it was mine, I'd probably till it all under, seed and roll, seed and roll, seed and roll . . . or sod over it.
In Canada, we can't get 'crabgrass' treatment, just stuff for dandelions and other 'broad-leaf' weeds. Plus, the 'lawn' (I use the term loosely) at my present place is tiny: 15X20 or so, and in pretty poor shape, so it wouldn't take much time or money to redo. (The plan is to rip it all up and do a Japanesey gravel & rock garden thingy: No watering required, little or no maintenance, just rake it once in awhile.)

I'm battling crab grass & nut grass... nasty bastards...
I got some Ortho spray & it seems to work as now I have some dead patches all over my lawns. It's not supposed to hurt the good grass, just kill the bad grass... I think I'm going to get the larger container & a pump sprayer & do the entire back lawn first. I also need something to keep the bermuda grass from growing into the flower beds! If anyone can recommend anything for that, I'd appreciate it :)

Follow the Craig (my real name) method.

It's all green. You mow all of it. That means its grass.
