View Full Version : Checking references- viewing past work
Is it considered above and beyond the norm to ask to see someone's home that has used a builder you are checking up on? I am going to be contacting references for a builder we are talking to, and would very much like to see his work first hand.
Opinions are appreciated. Thanks.
Some builders (me included) will request some of their clients if it would be acceptable to have walk-throughs of future clients. I think it's more than acceptable (with permission) to go and see the work first hand.

Of course, as this snotty ole gal asked me one time "Have you got any GOOD references ? "
To which I replied ( already deciding I wasn't working for the B***H)
"Well, mam.....I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I'm not quite so stupid as to give you bad ones !"
Understand my point ?

hahahahah
That's basically how I'm getting started. The owner of the basement I'm finishing is showing it off to everyone that comes in the house. I'll finish it next week, and get some pics.

I don't think there is a fool proof method of choosing the right contractors. Like Rich said, no one is going to give you references of unhappy people to call or jobs they have done that are less than impressive. In the end you have to depend on your gut feelings and what little you can learn about the contractor from others. We built last year and all in all we were very happy with all the sub's we hired. All of them may have something about them you would like to change but you just need to be a little flexible and realize everything will not alway run according to plan. Always keep in mind, its just a house.

I think it is very reasonable to check references and walkthrough at least one other finished project. When we contracted with a builder for my house, I talked to 3 or 4 clients, walked through one house that the builder had built for a customer, and walked through a spec house that was finished and on the market. I also spoke with 3 subs. Yes, they were all 'good' references, but I got some piece of mind and a good house in the end. During and after our house was built, I provided references and walkthroughs for 5 or 6 future clients for the builder. Most people are happy to do it, if they had a good experience with the builder. I know I was.
