I'm adding some new walls in a remodeling job. These new walls will abut existing walls. Do I need to cut out the sheetrock to attach the studs or should I simply attach the stud against the sheetrock?

Dusty, Is it hitting on a stud on the existing wall?

Probably not. I was considering nailing to the top plate and the bottom plate to secure the stud, but I probably should add a T, huh?

Yeah, it really depends on what you want to do.

I have seen it done both ways.

Are you going to drywall/tape/bed it when you get the framing done?

If not, I would rip the drywall out and T it.

Thanks, Cole. I'll probably T it. It's not that much more trouble. I'll be doing some taping and bedding anyway as I add some new drywall, so no big deal. The point of not cutting out the sheetrock was for convenience and time, but I'm saving, what, maybe an hour's work? I think I'll do it the best away instead of the okay way. Thanks for helping me figure this out. Next time I come to Dallas, I'm taking you to the golf course.
