hi there,

question regarding insulation

I have an office room being built on the main floor. the diningroom is opposite the room. I'm looking at adding insulation to the office only to try and dampen the noise a bit if possible (not concerned about temperature).

Do I need to place any plastic vapour barrier on either interior wall or can I just leave it exposed and the drywall can go up against it directly. probally going to be the green stuff. (save n' sound).

thnaks in advance,
Allen

No vapor barrier is needed on an interior wall unless you plan to keep your office 20 degrees cooler than your dining room. The insulation will reduce sound transmission a little but if there is a door in the wall it will not be very effective. I don't know what save 'n sound is or the green stuff but to stop sound you need resiliency, or mass, or better yet, both. For resiliency stagger stud or double stud it or use "resilient channels". Add thicker drywall for mass. It can help for one side to be thicker than the other. Try to minimize openings for recepticles and switches or at least avoid putting them in the same stud bay. Seal the drywall and framing at the edges. Avoid gimmicky products that haven't been independently tested like sound boards, etc.
