Foundation dimenions: 28'x36' - nutshell advice needed: how to span this floor system the cheapest (considering cost of longer joists, and cost of materials used for support).

I am in the planning stage of our new home construction...and want to know if there is a chart for building wood support Beams. This beam will be used in our crawlspace to support the floor system. The span of the support needs to be about 36'. The width of the floor is 28' x 36'. If I have a support beam of 36', this would allow me to span the 28' width with 2x10 joists and meet the span code of 14' 1" (1/2 the distance of the 28' width). What is typical code for the joist overlap? Obviously in the above scenario, I would have a 2' overlap using 14' joist stock.

Is it cheaper to span this distance with wood (assuming that i will need support piers in my crawlspace to brace the beam) than a metal I beam (which i assume will still need some support piers)? If I choose to use 2x10' boards, how many boards thick is necessary for the 36' span with pier support?

The other option is to do 2 beams across the other direction of the floor and split the 36', making 3 sets of joists. Those joists would have to be 12' sections.

Between the 2 options above, which is the most common? 1.) to take the longer span and divide twice, or 2.) take the shorter span and have longer joists?

thanks for your advice.

In Wisconsin joist overlap at the beam is limited to 8", minimizing any uplift issues in the floor area on either side of the beam. Check your local building codes to see if you have similar requirements
