I'm adding a room on to my place. It's single story and I need to put a footing down. My problem is, I don't know how deep to go with it or how wide. I read the post below this one but I'm not sure it's the samething.

location, location, location! Where do you live? Check with your local building inspector to see what the depth of a footing is in your area. Any carpneter or mason in your area will know it also. Size of footing? It depends what you are going to put on the footing. I'll send an attachment.

I live in northern California. I never thought about asking the building inspector. Thanks.

Never feel guilty or stupid about asking questions to a building inspector or his office staff. Your taxes pay his wages and that is his departments job. Usually they have lots of brochures and stuff in their office. Don't be put off by anyone being officious either (it happens).

Most building inspectors have a chip on their shoulders when they are out in the field.. but if you get a hold of them in their office before they head out for the day they're actually pretty good people.
Oh and here is the attachment from roger.
It's a pretty big file - had to keep it that big in order to read it.
