One of the biggest expenses we're facing with this kitchen is the color my wife has chosen.

Because we're doing wood floors in the kitchen she doesn't want a wood stain on the cabinetry.

She wants a vanilla glaze type of thing.

Glazes are ridiculously expensive.

Is there such thing as an antiqued white stain that will hide most or all of the wood grain?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not Dragon but here goes. You can put a cheap wipe-on dark colored stain on and then paint with 2 coats of a satin, latex paint.. lightly sand between coats. Then use an abrasive pad in some areas to allow the stain to show through. Such as in the heavy wear spots - panel edges and around the knobs. Then overlay with a water based polurethane finish. Turns out very nice and it's easy to do.

The wife has agreed to look into the possiblility of a stain as long as it doesn't blend with the floors.

My floors in the kitchen will be linseed oiled pine.

An idea as to what they look like is probably American Cherry. They're kind of a brownish orangey red.

I don't really know colors very well beyond what my original box of crayola taught me when I was coloring inside the lines ;)

So now i'm just waiting to here from now 4 different cabinet companies that are coming up with stuff now.

Thanks for the advice Rich but uh this is no job for me.

BUT. I will use this as a reference for the next vanity that I build.

Nope- you've got other work to get done. Let your wife do it perhaps. I have a friend who loves to do this kind of stuff. This is a Debbie Travis type of project. Glazing it can be time consuming, but not terribly difficult nor expensive (given size of project and price of alternatives) for DIY.

Maybe you got nervous? ;)

The cabinet makers would be handling any of this kind of thing. I've been searching for an alternative to glazing. Glazing is one of the most expensive things.

But I may have successfully convinced my wife that we can splurge on other things likethe countertops if we cut out things like glazing.

Are you sure you aren't me? ;)

Excellent advice.
