I am building a screened-in porch with a shed roof. The shed roof will be attached to the wall of my house. The advice I have been given, regarding creating an 8 inch overhang on each side of the roof, is to build a 2x4 "ladder" which attaches to the end rafter. To make the "ladder", 2- 2x4s would be cut the same length as the rafters and would have the samge angle cuts at each end (minus the bird's mouth). 2x4 blocking would be installed every 24 inches, or so, to hold the ladder together. The ladder would be attached to the outside rafter to create the overhang. My question is one of shingling and flashing. Up until I decided to add the gable overhang I understood how to appropriately flash where the roof meets the house. Now, b/c of the overhang, I'm unsure how the flashing will work where the rafter-ledger stops and the overhang starts. How should my flashing work? Also, is this how you would build the overhang?
