I have a deck that extends approx. 14 ft. behind house and 9 ft. off ground with walk-out basement. Four 6x6 posts on the end away from the house.
The concrete footings for two of the posts are 'kicking out' a bit. There is a steep grade behind house and a lot of fill dirt was brought in at time of construction. I assume this settling is what caused the two footings to kick-out away from the house. Top of footing/pier and bottom of post have moved away from house a bit.
Thus the two posts have a noticeable lean as a result of footing movement. The worst footing is 3 in. farther from back of house than the two good footings. Or (from different perspective) if I place a 4 ft level on the post it is about 1 1/2 in. off vertical (over 4 ft). I havn't noticed much movement over the past year or two.
Questions - How much should I be concerned on this 9 ft post lean of several inches? Is this something that should be corrected? Is there an easier way to correct than repouring the two footings? Is it practical to jack up the deck, excavate some of the dirt on the house side of the footing/pier and realign the footing to vertical? It seems all the deck weight would be a vertical force so maybe excavating around the footing would be OK? I asume the deck footing/pier is some 3-4 ft. depth. Thanks for any insight into my problem.
