What venting options do I have on a small hip roof shed? I planned to do a continuous soffit vent to match the house with a ridge vent (because it sounded like a good idea). Unfortunately I only have 30 inches of ridge and really only the space between the two common trusses on 24 centres. Here's a sketch. The ridge vents I've seen online are all at least 4'. The roofing material will be a fibreglass laminate shingle with high profile ridge & hip shingles.

Owens Corning makes a ridge vent that comes in a roll and can be cut to length. Of course it is a 20ft roll. You can get it at Home depot and Lowes. However that doesn't give you a lot of venting on that roof. You might want to use a couple of the standard square metal roof vents and mount them on the back side of the roof.

Thanks Kadoka. I think I saw the ridge vent roll. Does it look like a thick coarse furnace filter? It seemed kind of hokey to me and it wasn't clear at how shingles could be secured on top and still look okay. And yes, I don't think 20.5" of that would give enough venting. So regular vents it is.

This isn't like a furnace filter. It has a vinyl layer on the top and the bottom is a fabric of some sort. They work really nice and look nice under the shingle caps. I have use it on a couple of roofs and am very pleased with the look and the way it is made.

The ridge vent I saw said it provided 18 in^2 for every foot which isn't enough. I went with a single rectangular metal vent (same type as the house) on the side opposite the skylight. By the inspector's calculation, it is enough. Given that I have no plans to insulate or enclose the attic space in any way, it's definitely enough.
