Adding Basement Entrance

I want to add an outside entrance to the basement. The house slopes on the side where i want to add it so i am basically pulling earth away from the house to add the door. I am only going to pull it away in front of where i will be adding the door so I will be exposing the footing of the foundation in front of the door. I know that you are supposed to add a frost wall when you have a walk-out basement, but if it is only for 4' am i going to subject the foundation to possible damage?
