An interior designer is hiring me to create drawings on AutoCad. It is a part-time/ contract work.

Should I get paid by the hours or on the amount of drawing that I draw?

Also where can I get infomation on this topic, I am located in Canada.

Need some ideas

Thanks

Typically you would get paid by the hour, unless you want to contract with your designer for each job giving a bid each time he/she has a project. And rework is more complicated on fixed-bid jobs. Charge by the hour.

Where to get more info...dunno.

Thanks for the reply, so getting paid by the hour will be the best option for both party?

Yes, esp if he/she already has trust in you.

By the hour is okay if you're good. But if you're slow, you may anger the client by taking too long and running up too large of a bill.

I charge by the drawing. I can usually judge what needs to be done and how long it will take. It's easier, and both parties know what they're getting.

O/S, I understand your point about taking too long. How do you accommodate for changes to plans, or when the client says they forgot to mention something?

10 years ago I was creating professional web pages. I charged by the hour. They were always a work in progress for the clients.

Anytime I felt like I took too long because of my own limitations, I didn't bill those extra hours. Anytime the client wanted a change or wanted to add something, I'd tell them it'll take between x to y hours. If I went over, I just ate the time. If I went under, it was a bonus to the client as I wouldn't charge them but for the time I actually worked. I rarely went over and hardly ever had unbilled time.

I'd envision CAD work to be the same sort of work-in-progress until the client was completely satisfied.

I let them know that they get x number of revisions not to go over a certain number of hours. Then after that, we renegotiate additional charges.

This keeps down the number of nit picky things and the carelessness of overlooking mistakes that will need to be corrected. When they have to pay additional charges, it seems like they are more careful the first time around.
