I looked in the crawl space of a house for sale. The main beam is supported by large timbers resting on concrete footers in the span between poured concrete walls. The spacing of the timbers is fairly close together, about six feet near the front of the house, but the back of the house has a 10 foot span from the last timber to the concrete foundation wall. Two questions: Is timber an acceptable material for the support? My current house is similar, but the supports are stacked concrete block rather than timber. Is the long span on one end normal? My current house has supports spaced out evenly across the entire length of the main beam.

How big are the timbers? How big is the main beam? There should be no problem with the timbers supporting things as long as they are protected against rot and termites.

The beam is 3-2x10. The timbers are pressure treated 8x8 about 24" long stood on end. Upon closer inspection, i have noticed that the joists at the rear, where no support is present, are actually spanning the entire foundation and do not end at the beam. Thanks for the quick reply.

It doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about.
