we decided to have accordion shutters installed on the upstairs windows before we start the construction for the addition in the back since the roof will have tile and that will be more problamatic later on...

I'm in the process of scheduling estimates with different companies - how should I compare the companies once I have their estimates? what features should I look for?

Scope out all your bids when received to determine that the scope of work matches (apples to apples) quality of product used is same or similair, warranty on product/workmanship is equal, contractor willing to agree to a written completion time frame and that contractor can submit a certificate of insurance (for your protection).

are there features I should look for/stay away from?

Describe "accordion". Want to be sure I don't mis-understand the terminology

What Dano describes is what I call a bid tab. Essentially a tab for each scope of work. Anyway - take an Excel spreadsheet and put all the scope items on one side (left) and the next columns are for each bidder. Across from each scope item put a dollar value or yes/no depending on what the item is. Use them day in and day out - very easy to compare scopes then.

I think the accordian is really louvered.

Rich and Dano have good advice. In addition to insurance, insist on workmans comp as well.

looks like the musical instrument...installed on the outside of the windows and they are permanent fixtures to the house. in the event of a hurricane, they are easily closed from the inside of the house - ideal for 2nd stories and higher

Features....let's see..you mentioned that your new addition roof is going tile therefore access to the exterior on that elevation will be restricted..in that case I would go Vinyl (no maintenance) and make certain all hardware is stainless or galvanized.
