Congrat's. And welcome to the C-R forum.

How about you tell us a little about yourself and your new home?

I read this forum non-stop during the building of the house. Since I served as the contractor plus did a lot of the work myself what I learned here really helped out.

The house is not that large cause it's just the wife, me and our Maltese.
It's 1876 sq. ft.
Ceiling is 9'. Cathedral ceiling in great room is 24'. (which was a ton of fun painting).
3 bedroom, 2 bath.
Master bath has whirlpool & a 4' shower.
Master bedroom has trey ceiling.
It serves us just fine.

Cool! Was it your first build? What part did you find the hardest?

Nice job. How long did it take you?

The hardest part was living 370 miles from where the house was being built.
My job allowed me to leave on Sunday afternoon - drive to site - and stay until Friday.
I did this for a number of weeks. Had my RV on site so had place to stay.
My dad lives right down the road and he watched out for things in my absence.

The most aggravating part was the sub-contractors not showing up when promised and not even calling to let me know.

I worked 16 -17 hours everyday I was there. It was fun but sometimes the pressure to get certain things accomplished before time to leave was almost too much. But we made it.

I did the land clearing, dug & installed conduit for underground service, installed insulation, laid the tile in both baths, hallway, entryway & kitchen.
All the trim work including installing the doors, bathroom vanities and all the painting. Installed built-ins dishwasher and microwave. Built our 400' road.
Plus whatever I can't recall right now.

We poured the slab in September 05 and completed the house in May 06.

This was after going through Katrina too. (Louisiana)

Anyhow that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!!!

Congratulation meisal!

Your house looks great. I'm sure your wife and maltese both love your new shelter.

I love the trees at the back of your house. You chose a very nice environment.

I agree, what a nice location. I'd love to do something like this but no money or time!

Tremendous dedication to live that far from the project and still see it through. Finding reliable subcontractors can often be both an art and a science. Good for you for finding a solution that works for you and your family as well as seeing it through to fruition.

Nice work :) Subcontractors can definitely be difficult - really sucks when you need to get something important done like electric work and one guy holds everything up for days >.<
