I have three smallish areas of plasterboard that need plastering with multifinish plaster. Can anyone tell me, please, the best way to go about skim plastering as I am a relative novice?
That is a tough one, it is hard to explain without showing.
Did you search the net for videos?

Get a bucket of pro-lite with the blue lid. Scoop out desired quantity into another bucket. Wet it down a little. Mix it with a mixer like you would mixing thinset and grout. Get a "real" drywall trowel. Not a paint scraper. You want the plaster mix to have the consistency of half or so of the way it was in the original bucket. Scoop some on to your trowel. Spread smooth over area. Let dry for over a day. Sand with a sanding sponge. Paint.
It'd probably be a good idea to put some mesh tape in the small areas to be filled.
BUT...this is all an assumption. As Cole said...we haven't seen it yet.
