Getting ready to remove my homes slate and replace with asphalt..any ideas on what I could use the slate for? I tend to collect and save everything and I KNOW there must be some useful projects I can utilize this for....evn bird house roofs if necessary....Just can't come to grips with trashing..

Countertops, tabletops, utility room floors?, tub/shower surround?

Entry way floor is popular. Mantle around the fireplace is also popular. There are roofers, and entire companies, that buy reclaimed slate. You may be able to make some money.

Personally I'd love to have slate on my roof. Once I find a house that I plan to die in I will have a slate roof.

I like slate - but metal is my favorite. Not for look mind you - I like the pitter patter of rain .. haha.

LOL. That's one of the reasons I dislike metal roofs :)

Honestly I've never really heard the sound of a metal roof inside the house - maybe the only place it can get a little annoying is on a covered porch.

Grumpy...like your idea of selling..will check it out...and I also love slate..brings the value of the house up...looks good..all benefits (except cost). This appears to be the original slate (100+ yrs) and is good for another 100 but someone had painted it with a fiber coating which unfortunately gives the impression of LEAKS....to any home inspector or someone of knowledge. I;m not looking forward to doing the job..roof pitch is an easy 12/12 and I don't do heights as well as I use to...

Dano if it's a tall 12/12 I would suggest using a professional. I'm on roofs daily and a 12/12 still makes me slightly uneasy. And slate is MUCH more slippery than shingles.

12/12 makes me a little uneasy also. I worked for my uncle in Minnesota one summer doing roofs. We did some shingles on an A frame church - even though we had bucket seats and all that it still made me wink up everyday. Did another church in metal in Montana that was around a 10/12 or so - a little slickery with the morning dew.

Grumpy..yea..it's a tall one @ 20 ft...having a friend from Church help who is more experienced then I..of course the good thing in a slate tear off is you start at edge working up to ridge..thereby eliminating having to work on the slate..
