I have recently purchased a house that was built in 1956. There is a basement in the house with a double garage entrance in the front, which I am wanting to use for a small woodworking shop. The garage is built of block and has a span of 27' X 18'. In the center of the garage there is a single support post. I am wondering if the 18' is too long a span to remove this post safely. If so, could I perhaps put an I beam beneath the wall the post is supporting? Would appreciate any info or reccomendations.

Do not remove the post, it sounds as though it is supporting an 18' girder in midspan that in turn supports the 27' dimension. Yes a beam of some dimension can span that with no post... engineer time. LVL's may work and would be easier to handle. A good building supply may be able to help size them.
