Planning and control techniques have evolved over many years as solutions to the many problems encountered by project managers. They are used to reduce the probability and impact of things such as poor management decisions, mistakes, rework and overruns and offer benefits to clients and stakeholders by introducing specific procedures, increased data capture, improved response times, etc.
However, new ideas appear to be emerging regarding the importance of these techniques and even suggesting that people skills such as leadership and communication are more important to project managers.
Are planning and control techniques becoming less important to the successful completion of projects than they once were?
