Has anyone heard of the Hawthrone Effect? How important is feedback when looking to improve worker behavior on jobsites?
Enter web-enabled monitoring solutions: Using a camera on a jobsite can positively impact safety, especially when using the 'visually rich' information to provide feedback to workers.
Thoughts?

Sounds like a gimmick.
A good contractor want to run a good job and will control "behavior" on the job.
Safety and safety instruction is a hands-on supervision problem. Nothing beats a site walk to see what is really a potential problem.

You have to have the tapes monitored anyway. Plus, how useful is it to have video of someone falling off the top of a ladder when you might have been walking by before he fell? It sounds good, but definitely doesn't replace people on site correcting mistakes before they do damage.

The "Hawthorne Efect" is reported to be only a temporary effect and does not create long term effects for a constantly changing environment such as a construction site.

How about holding people acountable for their actions?? work in an unsafe manner, and off the job you go. Common now. Safety should be #1 for all.

Watching an overall view of the progress of a jobsite over let’s say a year or two is a good application for cameras. Likely watching employees on a jobsite will not improve safety at all. Of course they will act differently in front of the cameras, but can you cover all areas of a large project? Job site safety and production meetings would seem to work much better to improve the safety and motivation of employees.
The other side of this coin is that the video from the web cam can also be used against you when somebody does make a mistake... any mistake.

Agreed, the GC is ultimately responsible for the project until Owner turnover and acceptance, which in turn means that the GC is responsible for all acts of negligent and stupidity on the jobsite. Once it is recorded than many interpretations of the incident can be proposed.
