View Full Version : Texture finish on drywall
I have place a wall (drywall) up in my home. I would like it to match my other walls...
I have what is call orange peel texture walls.
How can I place this texture finish ? with a texture paint gun? what type of gun?
What is the texture made of? plaster ? spackle ?
I know it place on the walls before you paint.
Is it possible for a homeowner to do this ? HELP...

honestly, I'd call in a drywall contractor. My experience is that they can do it much faster and much better than I can and I've stopped trying. Not the best DIY answer. Sorry.

I did the same thing in my new bathroom, first you need a hopper for wall and ceiling texture, runs off an air compressor, renting one or buying one is about the same price, I found a coworker that had one. joint compound is what you use add water to thin for spraying, should be slighly thicker than paint. Practice with a piece of wall board leftover first, to get the right look. use plastic drop cloths to cover anything you don't want texture on.

I agree with giddonah. I did a bathroom a while ago and did it just the way that diyfire describes, but it can be a pain to get the right consistency and can be a bit messy. The bathroom I did came out ok, but didn't match the other rooms which was fine and wasn't that noticable. If you are trying to match an existing wall, I would definately look at hiring someone. If they are any good it should take them very little time. Matching texture seems to be more of an art.
Thanks guys. I will have to do it myself because I dont have much money...

Best advice I can give is to practice on scrap drywall pieces until you are satisfied with results----then take a deep breath and go for it. If you screw it up then you can probably scrape it off if you don't wait too long. Just fake it till ya make it!

good advice...was gonna suggest the same thing. Beats doing the wall and having to scrape it all off.

Truly, one way to end up saving yourself money is to hire someone to perform this work for you. Because if you really think about it, you are going to end up buying or renting the hopper, sprayer, tips, etc. along with masking materials, all other material needed, etc. to perform this work.
Also, there is quite a bit of prep work, prime, mold treatments, etc. that a professional would be able to complete quickly and completely.
A bathroom cannot run you more than 400-500 dollars TOPS for a knock-down or orange peel application. You can easily spend that on a hopper and sprayer alone.
