Wow this is just the type of forum I've been looking for the past few days! Looks like there is a wealth of knowledge to be had. I've recently decided to finish our basement and am trying to think as much of it out as possible before i get into trouble.

This is my first time taking on a task of this magnatude so I've got my work cut for for myself.

One problem I already know I"ll encounter is that I have a steel support beam running directly above where I need one of my walls. To complicate things the beam has ducts that also run parrelel to it so that I can just move the wall slightly to one side or the other.

Does anyone know the proper procedure for attaching a non load bearing wall to something like this? I was thinking maybe some kind of construction adhesive or even possibly drilling holes and using bolts and nuts to attach it?

Any help anyone could shed on this would be great. Thanks! I'm sure I"ll be back for more questions.

This is not a big deal at all, we do it in commercial construction all the time. The way I have always done something like this, keeping in mind that I usually use metal framing, is attach the top plate to the steel beam with a powder actuated tool (Hilti or Trakfast brands). It's simple, fast and holds forever. I don't know that I would rec construction adhesive as your only bond, that would scare me a little to have the shear strength of the wall dependent on glue basically.
