Hi. We're working on our "beyond a handyman special" and have run into a problem. We have removed the old sheetrock on either side of a fireplace. The fireplace is in the center of the wall & is floor-to-ceiling red brick. We are replacing all sheetrock on outer walls in this house, so that we can upgrade the insulation & check for water & carpenter ant problems. What I'm wondering is...how do you transition from the sheetrock to the brick? Can't tape it, can't slide the sheetrock behind the brick (although that was how it was built). What can we do at the joint where the wallboard & the brickwork meet? Our long term plan is to cover the brick with faux stonework. Will this help? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks for listening.
You could scribe some trim against the brick. Or mud in a transition strip (1/2" aluminum type strip). The faux stonework would work too.
End bead is another option

I would find a nice piece of hardwood or other kind of wood that matches your furniture and scribe it to the brick. maybe a piece 1-1/2" wide by 3/8" thick.
Once you have you wood stock get a protractor and with the wood standing flat and tight to the wall and tight to the brick set the protractor to the widest gap. Holding the protractor horizontal transfer the profile of the brick onto the wood.
Use a jig saw and a wood rasp to cut and fine tune the piece.
With the heating and cooling of the brick it will move and cause plaster to crack. The trim will hide all that.
