dont know if this is where this belongs, but here goes....
i need to build a 4' x 6' platform and stairs coming out of my addition, but i have a massive oak tree which i assume has massive roots as well, right near by.
instead of digging footings, could i ( in new york) build the platform on concrete blocks and NOT attach the deck to the house?
thanx

You could, but you will have no idea where the frost will move your little platform to.

Your building inspector may require footings below the frost line, just as they do for free-standing decks.

If it's going to be attached to the addition, you need footers. If it's not, you're taking a chance on the platform moving away from the addition.

ok... thanx. i just hate to have to dig thru those roots... for the tree's sake, and my back's sake too.

the tree roots will not be everywhere, you should be able to find a spot to dig where you can get thru without hitting or damaging the roots.

then you will be doing the job correctly, otherwise it will surely move

Probably not that best of an idea, and if you disturberd the root systems the oak could die.

Got to agree with ctdecks try your best to do it right, and do not disturb the tree roots inside of the drip line.

You should not dig through tree's roots for the sake of tree and environment. Instead you can make a concrete footings attached with your house.
