Finish Coat over Primer

Is there a time frame for applying a finish coat over prime coat? By that I mean, how much time can pass before a prime coat needs to be re-primed before adding a finish coat of paint?

It can depend on many factors - use of the space (smoking room, shop, etc). The primer coat will pick up contaminates over time and the final coats may not adhere as well. If in doubt - run a quick sand over it and re-prime.
