Attaching shed roof to T1-11 siding

Hello, I just found this forum.

My question is similar to "screenporch21's" posted on 2/24/04. My porch will have a 5/12 shed roof using rafters.

Can I lag bolt a 2X ledger directly to the T1-11 (19/32), thru a 1" rigid foam panel and finally into the 2X6 16" O.C. studs?

And if so, how would I flash it.

You can bolt all the way through although it is not recommended. The problem with going through the T1-11 and a 1" rigid foam panel is that the connection goes from a shear value to a moment value where the actual attachment is 1.5" away from the support structure itself (namely the stud). I would recommend cutting through the T1-11 and the 1" foam and put the ledger against the 2x6 studs. Then flashing becomes (should be placed before putting ledger and rafters up) an easy installation of putting it behind the T1-11 siding. After rafters are installed and you're sheeting you can roof it and fix up the flashing as needed.
