Hi. I'm in the middle of a lot of projects and need some advice.

I'm planning on consolidating my aquariums into a single 100 gallon acrylic tank with a footprint of 60"x20". It will be about 1100 lbs. total. Unfortunately where I'd like to put the tank probably isn't the greatest place structurally. It would happen to land parallel on top of 2 joists. The joists are 2x10s on 16" centers spanning 13 feet. There is 1 1/2" of floor on the topside (3/4" plywood + 3/4" T&G oak flooring). While it is possible to place a pole jack under the one, it is not desirable due to a finished basement being below.

Is there a way to calculate approximate safe load factors? I've scoured the internet and things tend to get complicated very quickly.

thanx!

That's about 132 psf which is quite a bit. An engineer could run some calculations to tell you if it's safe or not. They will need to know how far away from the end span the aquarium will be placed and if it's a solid flat base or something like 4 point loads from legs.
Running it through TJ Beam I couldn't place it anywhere (edge or center) to get it to work.

Thanks for the advice and running some numbers Rich!

I believe we decided to sacrifice and place a jack post under the joists in question in order to place the aquarium where we want. Probably in the center of a thick steel plate which will span both joists. This should add the safety factor we need.

After the aquarium setup, next project will be removing a wall, but I'll save that for another post!
