Hi,
I want to build a roof over my entry door (Portico). The area that the roof will cover is an 8ft by 6ft landing. It will be a common gable and I plan to tie it into the main gable roof using a blind valley. The main roof pitch is 10/12 with a 6-inch overhang. I plan to remove the facsia from the rafter of the main roof and slide the side joists under the existing roof, using the 2x6 wall to support them. Would there be any problems if I did this?

I found a great application called Easy Rafter that allow me to put my dimensions in and then calculates the valley plates, jack and common rafter lengths, angles, heal and seat. I need to know lumber size so it can calculate everything correctly. Can I use a single 2x6 board for the side joist, ridge and rafters? Should I use ridge and rafter connectors or is that overkill? Is there a rule of thumb for what the pitch should be when meeting an existing gable? Does a less pitched roof give a better or worst appearance?

Thanks in advance.

The only thing I don't think will work (at least in a typical roof system) is the part where you mention framing the fascia of the new roof and resting it on the wall. That is unless you are talking about the side bearing beams. This can still be done but you will be framing it into the side of the house most likely. That's fine - you'll just need to develop an attachment detail there.
My suggestion would be to frame the support beams out from the house with the top of them the same height as the existing wall. Then your roof framing will sit on top of that, and by keeping the same slope and overhang distance, your fascias will tie in perfectly.
You will probably need a double 2x6 on the sides and a 2x8 for the ridge beam (it makes it much easier to frame 2x6's into). I like a 10/12 myself.
