Hi

I'm beginning to install interior window trim, and I've noticed that the drywall I used (5/8" thick) is slightly higher than the window jamb, so the casing doesn't lie flat.

I don't want to fill this gap with caulking...do I use a jamb extension instead to raise the jamb flush with the drywall? If so, how do I make one? The gap between is only about 1/8" - 1/4". Do I just use a table saw to rip a strip of wood this thin, and then glue it on?

Thanks for any advice

Hammer down the sheetrock close to the jam to remove the crack and let the trim float itself out.

I tend to take a piece of casing and hold it flush with the inside of the jamb, then pencil a line on the outside. I then cut the sheetrock about 1/4 inch inside the line created and remove it. Using 1/4 inch reveal on the jamb when the casing is installed will leave about 1/2 inch of sheetrock for the casing to rest on.

Yes, you'll have to bevel your miter cuts to get a good fit, but it is seldom over 2 degrees and you really should be beveling to fit anyway.

Depending on the casing, I use the power planer on the backside to remove what's needed. Sometimes it takes all those tricks and a bit of french for good measure.
