View Full Version : Footer Four Rebars - TOO MUCH???

Help! To increase the strenght of my footer, I requested four courses of 5/8 rebar. I thought the subcontracter would run four courses of rebar on one verticle with each rebar immediately above the other. However, they instead ran two 5/8 rebar on two different vertical rebar. My footer ended up with two runs running beside the other about four inches apart with two rebar on each run. The sub then used 3500 psi. Do I have a really strong footer or a serious problem?
I think you'll be fine. My typical footer has 2 continuous pieces of #5 rebar that are placed mid-height of the footer and at the horizontal 3rds (roughly) of the footer. 3500 psi is a standard structural mix design.

I hope I was clear in my description. The best way to describe the placement of my 4 continuous strands of 5/8" rebar is to liken them to two sets of railroad tracks turned up on their side and placed next to each other about three to four inches apart running continuously through the middle of the the 8" footer. Again, I hope this is alright.
One last question. The stem wall was not placed directly center. Rather, the stem wall (which is 3000 psi and loaded with fibermesh) is placed on the inside half of footer the footer. Fortunaetly, because there are two seperate but continuous courses (each made up of two 5/8" rebar running through the trench on verticle rebar) the stem wall is directly above one of my rebar courses. Is this OK? I hope my description is clear. The sub said that it was ok and left plenty of room for the brick wall to be placed fully on the footer and above the other two strand course of rebar. Is he being forthright or covering up the fact that the footer was misplaced off of blue print spec? Thank you sir.
