View Full Version : Window Stool

I understand that the window stool is inside and the window sill is the outside sill plate on a window.
My windows in a new house are drywalled and I need to install the stool.
In the old days we had stool material that was routed so that it could be installed at a slight tilt on wooden windows. Nobody sells this material around here anymore.
The only thing I can find at the local lumber yards is a material that is Formica covered on top. The edges wouildn't be finished.
I will not have curtains on the back of the house so I can look at the deer and turkey in the hay field. I will be painting the stool white.
I guess the best look would be to cut a finish board to fit with ears on it, route a trim edge and put a trim piece underneath? I guess my question is: does anybody sell material that I can just cut to fit?

You can find all types of pre-fabricated window stool (aka 'stool cap') at any real lumber yard.

Ask where the pros buy lumber....not the local Home Depot or Lowes.

Thanks.
I went to a large lumber company in Imperial, MO and they had a formica covered board but said most people just painted a board.
I also went to the largest lumber company in Missouri (their Rolla, MO location) called Meeks Lumber, and they didn't have anything.
Evidently the local builders just cut a board and install.
My daughter does have nice finished stools in her house in St. Louis, but maybe the builder just had a finish carpenter fit and route out boards.

It's hard to believe that you can't find myriads of suppliers for stool/mouldings in your area.

Few carpenters/builders take the time to make their own stool, although some do.

It's just not cost effective to make your own on site and it's usually cheaper to use paint grade figerjointed pine or MDF type mouldings from a supplier.

Here are some possibilities to some suppliers in your area.

Hope it helps:

I certainly hope the poor guy has gotten his trim put up in the last 3 years...
Not the cheapest solution but if there is a millwork shop nearby they can usually make stool. When I worked in one we could produce stool, or all the trim for the house, out of any species desired.
