View Full Version : Wall studs are off

I am finishing my basement and I am getting ready to sheetrock. When I hold a 4 foot level across 4 studs, I have some that are way off.......meaning I have a gap between the level and stud face...with the worst at around 1 inch. I tried sawing halfway through the stud and pulling them out and "re-bracing", but it didn't work. I am now thinking of using adhesive as a filling, or applying 1/2 strips of plywood in the bad areas...
How can I resolve this?

My advice is to take them out and redo it with as straight as studs as you can get. make sure you put them up with the crown all the same way, facing the foundation wall. This is the best way to get as straight a wall as possible. It's a brand new room, might as well to it properly. But, I understand that may not be in your budget, so shimming the gaps should work as a quick fix.

I tried replacing them and I am still off. Out of about 50 studs, only a few are off.
Can you explain this shimming procedure you mention?
Thanks,

Why not just replace the few that are off. Before the drywallers did their thing I had about 5 or 6 that were warping that had to be replaced. Only took me an hour to change them out.

Either use plywood or rip down some 2x's to the width you need them to fill the gap so that the wall is level across. I would use 2x's since the distance will be different for each one. Screw and glue the shims so they do not move.
There are cardboard shims that you can buy cheap to shim the few spots. Staple them on. Try and keep any gaps to less than 8" and you should be fine. By gaps I mean between where the shims are and where the stud planes back in.
