Hello,
This is another beam and post problem. I need to build a loft area which will be 10' x 5'8 x 6' feet high. The room is 10' x 11.5' x 11.5' high with the entry and closet along the front 10' length and windows on the entire back 10' length and a 16" window sill. The purpose and use will be for my daughter to have a bed and perhaps a book shelf on top and my other daughter to be below. I have to avoid having a third post, at least in the front. The structure has to be free standing because the side walls in the room are framed with metal studs and as I understand they have little capacity to bear a load. The back wall is all aluminum channel windows from 4' to ceiling with 10" window sill.

The basic plan:
4x4 posts (would like to use only 4)
A 4x6 for the 4 sides mitered to 45 deg and all fastened and sitting on the top of the posts.
2x4 along the short span for joists at 16" spacing.

Questions:

Would 2 2x6 nailed or screwed together be able to replace the 4x6 in the event 4x6's are not available?

Is having the beams mitered joined and fastened sitting on top of the 4x4 posts better then bolting them to the post sides?

What is the best (most efficient) way to brace this structure assuming the walls will not lend any stability? The rub is I have 3/4" baseboard molding so perhaps I should notch the posts to be flush with the wall?

Thanks,
PS
Is there anyone in Brooklyn, NY area who wants to build this for me???
