Hi folks, I know this is a weird one, but I'm just hoping for some general advice on whether this design for floating my twin bed over my double bed looks feasible or not.

Basically, the plan is to have three "leg" structures... each with two vertical 2x4's with a horizontal 2x4 on top. Then 3 cross 2x4's running at an angle to the corner, then use 1x4's running across the beams to support the top mattress. Of course, I'll build some framing/shelves around it to keep it in place, but I'm just wondering about supporting the weight at the moment.

Here's some illustrations. The walls are shown with the |'s and _'s. The !'s and ='s are the "legs."

|___=====__

Then here, you can see the next layer... the cross beams, with \'s. (ignore the period, it's just for spacing)

|\
|!\ \
|\=\=\
| \ \ \
|. \ \ \
|___\=\=\__

And finally, the support beams for the mattress shown as /'s in this layer. Though of course, there'll be a lot more going across.... maybe 10 or so.

|___\/\=\__

I'm thinking the two legs next to the walls will be screwed into the wall and the two next to each other will be screwed into each other. Of course the cross beams will be screwed into the legs (probably with L brackets and such) and the walls for the 5 ends that touch the walls. And the support beams will be attached to the cross beams.

The bottom mattress sits between the two = legs (so they're about 4 feet apart) and the top mattress is at a 30 degree angle to the left wall parallel lengthwise to the cross beams and perpendicular to the support beams.

The left cross beam runs about 6 feet (the length of the mattress), the center one is 10 feet and centered on the mattress, the right one is about 7.5 feet, running from the head of the mattress to the bottom wall.

I hope this makes sense.

Basically my questions are if this seems like it'll be enough support and if the ! leg is necessary or not.

Whew.. I feel like a dog who just got done chasing it's tail for 30 minutes. :) Your ascii art doesn't help it much either - sorry.
It honestly doesn't take much to support a mattress especially if you also have a box spring. The weight distribution is pretty good because of having such a large flat surface. Most bed frames that I've seen that are supporting a mattress only with slats are around the 16" o.c.
