Is there a math equation to figure out how deep you need to dig for an object to stand vertical depending on it's weight and height?

Nothing simple, especially when the soil can be either very good or vary bad. The only good rule of thimb (without knowing about the soil and what you are building) is the deeper, the better.

It depends on more than weight or height, also...depending on the shape of the upper part, wind loads may come into play. As concretemasonry said, it depends on several factors, so there can be no general rule.

Oh guys. you all are great at math i suppose. I'm now playing a rubik cube toys to get familiar with number combination.;)

What type of object are you talking about? Would this be a post (with or without a sign on it maybe?), or a fountain, a lamp pole, etc.??? Might be able to give some pointers depending on what type of object it is. If you are installing just a post, don't need to go down too far, but if you plan on attaching a board onto it to make it like a sign, you'll have to go down a fair bit deeper to ensure that it remains vertical. If you're doing a lamp pole, I'd suggest you use concrete to hold it in place rather than straight soil (as you would do with a sign post).

1/3 to 1/2 of the post buried will be a good benchmark.
