I am a homeowner and my house has a gambrel roof. After a couple of years living in this house I have come to realize that I'm not a huge fan of the gambrel style of roof. If there is any way to alter the roof I will gladly hire a professional to handle it, but before I get a professional over to the house to give me some help I thought I'd post my question here:

Is there any way to alter a gambrel roof? Right now the house seems very modern on the inside, but looks like a barn on the outside. The house defies any specific style...so I'm not really concerned about that issue. Also...we live in the middle of a 43 acre forest, so I'm not concerned about "not fitting in" with the neighbors. I was hoping I might be able to add a gable style addition to the front of the house. Or perhaps there might be some way to extend the "mansard" portion of the roof to more closely resemble a gabled roof. I would love to push the style toward more of an Arts & Crafts look.

Any suggestions?

I love a barn but trying to make one a house is like putting lipstick, um never mind :)

Sketch it with a gambrel cross gable and see if that helps you. I've also seen them with a full length shed dormer off the upper roof for all but a couple of feet on the ends

How big is the house? It isn't impossible to remove the roof and re-frame it, A "craftsman-style" solution won't be easy...those typically have low-slope roofs with dormers, so if you did achieve that look, you would lose about half your second-floor space.
