I am placing large Granite slabs in the floor of four new houses that I am building for use as solar mass. The idea of the stone is to obsorb heat from the sun through the windows during the winter day but to stay out of the sun during the summer day. The window height is 30" off the floor and 57" high. wall height is 8'. Sofit overhang is 12". Long axis of the house is east-west true and the house sits at Lat 44deg 38'27".

How far from the wall dose the stone need to be and how wide should I make it?

I want to see if other peoples numbers come out the same as mine.

That depends on time of year and time of day. Noon on Dec 21st would give you the most intense sun during the heating months.. Noon on June 21st would give you the most intense sun during the cooling months. What is your timezone and longitude?

Taking the differences in solar time versus local time and throwing it out.. I come up with, for Dec 21st at Noon using CST, the distance from the inside face of a 5.5" wall is 6'-2 1/4" and the stone would need to be 11'-3 9/16" long.
