View Full Version : Any problem with this roof framing?
Attached is a sketch of the way I propose to frame my roof.
The house is 26 feet wide, the pitch is 6-12, the rafters and ceiling joists are 2x8s, the ridge board is 2x10, and the ceiling joist supports are 2x6s.
This is for a metal over plywood roof with no snow load.
Does anyone see any load or strength problems with this proposal ?
If not, would this work ok for a 5-12 or even a 4-12 pitch ?
( Trusses are not feasible for this situation for a number of pertinent reasons, and I would prefer not to use posts to support the ceiling joists.)
Thanks,
Arky

What you have is a half-baked truss. Why not use real trusses?
What you're doing is transferring load from the ceiling joists to the rafters. That isn't free; it has to be paid for with additional strength in the rafters. I'm not going to do the calculations for you, but I doubt that it works. there are loads on the rafters whether there is snow or not...wind, for example...and I'm sure there are code-required minimum loadings to be designed for.
The hangers should be vertical, also. There is no point installing them at the angles as you've shown.

Trussed rafter construction. It's been a year or ten, I've built some from engineered drawings, as Richard noted they had a vertical web. It is outside of prescriptive code so you are supposed to have it engineered. The webs go right up by the ridge to avoid additional bending load on the rafters. Nail to both the rafter and ridge. The pic is the best I recall. Sorry for the fine drawing but I hope it shows enough to get the idea
Answering as close as I can from the codebook tables;
Assuming 24" centers a #2 SYP 2x8 is good for a 13'2" horizontally measured span irrespective of pitch with a 30 psf snow load on the rafters.
CJ's, 24" oc, #2 SYP 2x8's, limited storage (20 psf) 14'2"
At 20 live/10 dead-30psf x 2' spacing x 26' span=1560 lbs
Half is bearing on the outer walls so the webs need to support 780 lbs. A .131" dia gun nail is good for about 100 lbs in syp so at least 8 in each end of the web.
Nailing, pitch matters, 30 psf snow is minimum listed, 28' building is closest;
7/12 pitch-7 16d COMMON nails at each heel and in lap. A 16 common in syp in the NDS is good for about 150 lbs, I'll let you do the math for the gun, it never hurts to use more than the minimum.
5/12-10 nails
4/12-12 nails
3/12-16 nails
Notice the thrust stress increases dramatically as the pitch drops.
