Hello,
I realize this is a Construction Management forum, but I was hoping to gain some insight into the roles and responsibilities of a CM and what issues most CMs have with designers.
My background is as a certified Retail Interior Designer (NCIDQ). I have about 7 years in the field, but have only touched upon actual construction for about 3 years. In other words, for about 4 years, I worked solely as an interior designer. As most of my projects were abroad, I wasn't able to do site visits or see the build (most issues were handled by the local CM).
After having left that job, I worked for a small design-build studio wherein I had more hands on experience. I saw my retail spaces from cradle-to-grave. Though that gave me a ton of experience in construction, I was still rather inexperienced in that the studio had a GC we always worked with, so no bidding, informal change orders, flexible deadlines, etc.
So, "in the real world" of construction, I feel I need to gain more experience. I'm going to be interviewing for a Design Manager position, which is essentially a Project Manager in charge of design and liasing with the CM.
I feel I have enough experience, but will do a bit of on-the-job learning. However, I need to pass the interview. How would you, as a CM, interview a potential Design/Project Manager? What are some best practices of DMs that helped move the project along smoothly? What failures or weaknesses do some DMs have that I could learn from?
Any help would be appreciated. Toss out some questions or whatever you can to drill me. I may not know the answer, but I'll try and find out... or you could explain it to me.
Again, I'm from an Architecture-Interior Design background.
