i installing a 320 amp meter base on my new bldg. there will be a 200 amp panel in the bldg. planned to put a 200 amp breaker box next to the meter for power to a future home (when i hit the lotto). power company says i have to have all main shut offs inside or outside to meet code. not one inside (main panel breaker) & one outside (200 amp breaker box). i live in rural illinois & have no city or county codes to meet. in the last few days i've looked at several properties that have multiple bldgs. one that was built within the last year. none of them would meet this code. i'm confused.

If you have no local codes the power company is the last word as far as rules you need to follow for the service.

Simple. Don't follow their rules, they won't hook up to it.

Sucks sometimes but it's true.

What they are requesting is correct BTW.

so i run the power inside the bldg. one 200 amp panel for the bldg, the other a 200 amp breaker for my home. every 200 amp thru breaker box i've found are for outdoor use. and that's were i see them used. i understand the concept of having all shut off in one location in case of an emergency. but if my home was on fire & my shop is locked, how would they shut off the services?
