Hiya Folks,
I'm building a deck that is 22' long and is cantilevered 2'. I've used 2x10's for my joists. I've temporarily nailed on my header joist to the ends of the joists using 16d nails but am looking for a bit more strength. I plan to use joist hangers as the final attachment to the header (which by the way is doubled up due to the length) but I'm not confident they will give me the strength I'm looking for in terms of keeping the header joist in place. I'm using the hangers with the cross nailing patterns. I will ultimately be hanging log siding off the header so am most interested in making sure it doesn't go anywhere. I was thinking of doing some blocking, perhaps at every other bay (32" OC) and attaching with through bolts. I'd have to put a bit of a spacer between the blocking and header joist to clear the joist hangers but that doesn't seem to be a big deal. I looked through the Simpson catalog as well for any sort of brace or tensioning device but really didn't see much that wouldn't interfere with the joist hangers. Just curious to hear if anyone has other/better ideas? Thanks very much. The advice I've gotten to date has been excellent and I think this will probably be my last question for this project. I still have the front deck to build but with what I've learned on this half, I'm pretty confident I have a good plan for the remaining work. Thanks again for the help!
Cheers,
