I have a garage that joins existing house. It currently has a flat rubber roof which I am removing and stick building a gable, 4/12 pitch roof over. I am tying the new roof into an existing 4/12 gable at 90 degrees. Do I locate the sleeper 2x's (that go on the existing roof of the main structure onto which I will nail the jack rafters and ridge beam for the new roof) even with the existing top plate of the garage, or should it be offset? I will be nailing these sleepers in an "A" to the existing sheathing under the shingles(removing shingles) and can't picture where the ends of the "A" should start. Thanks for the help.

Frame your new roof first and run the ridge onto the existing sheathing with the angled cut. Nail all your common rafters up to the top plate and then lay the sleepers in between the last rafter and ridge. Cut a small 2x block with an angle on it and slide it up against the last rafter so that the top edge of the block is flush to the top of the rafter and scribe the other side of the block that hits the existing sheathing. Go up to the top where the ridge is and do the same thing and scribe a line. Connect those two lines with a chalkline and snap it. That will be where your sleepers go.
That is the best way to do it because you can't go wrong because the top planes of your last rafters are there and the ridge is there to scribe too.

I do very similar to Joe. I tack a chalkline at the lower part on the far rafter and go back to the existing roof. I then lay a block on that roof, hold the line tight on that and slide around till the line just planes across the new common rafters. Mark the block location on the old roof. Go to the top and put the edge of the block againts the ridge and mark it. Snap a line between. When you're right you should be able to pull a string from far rafter to sleeper at any location and it'll plane in with the commons. Check it, then start cutting jack fill.

My family and I rented a house on the terms that the basement would be finishe by April 1, 2008 making it four bedrooms. The basement still isn't finished. There are 3 adults and 4 children living in a two bedroom space. I want out of our lease. What can I do?

Do you have those terms in writing, signed by the landlord? If so, write a letter demanding that he abide by the terms of the lease, and finish the basement within...what?...maybe 20 days, or else the lease will be null and void and you will seek another place to live, and will owe him nothing after you have moved.
If you don't have it in writing, it's a different story, because then the landlord will deny ever agreeing to it.
When does your lease expire?

I hope there were permits/inspections involved and everything is up to code, especially with bedrooms and egress windows.

Have you all noticed posts by folks with hot links in their signature line lately? They've made some pretty nonsensical posts, I'm assuming just to get that link posted. Yesterday "dantheman" made 2 posts asking what brand of drawing software someone used when the thread mentioned the software by name just a couple of posts above his.
Look at the previous posts by this poster. Yesterday it was about a leaking vent, stating that the vent had been repaired 2 years ago. Before that he was asking about laying flooring in his new addition. Now he says he's a renter. And to top it off he's advertising condominiums. Now would you buy a condo from a renter who doesn't know how to handle the terms of a contract? Or would you buy a carport from someone who is illiterate?
Not exactly sure what we should do with these folks, I guess there is merit in discussing some of this stuff but I doubt their sincerity.
