there was a sales guy approached me and calculated how much i can save in the next 10 years with their solar panel roof. anyone here has good experience with solar panel roof? thanks.
Are you talking about a photovoltaic system? Here's a bit of advice on energy savings - you're better off being an energy reducer than an energy producer. For that cost of a PV system to run your home you're looking at anywhere from 20,000 - 50,000. That would include the bank of batteries, the inverters, panels, installation, etc..etc. The energy savings that could be gained by upgrading your windows, or insulation package would have more immediate benefits and pay for themselves much quicker than a PV installation.
If you're looking at solar thermal for your hot water system - with a good southern exposure - you may be able to pay for it in around 5-8 years, with a few caveats. If you're living alone or living there seasonally - you might as well stick with electric or gas.
Another item, do you anticipate even living in the home for 10 years? If not, the increased resale value will never be gained back.. or at a minimum greatly decrease the pool of people that are willing to pay for the additional cost of the system.
And if you're thinking tax incentives - it's 30% (which sounds great) but can only claim 2000 of it.
