double gable roof connection

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

my girfriends grandparents live on a small farm house and would like to renovate it and sell it, so they can move to town, however, the house is a cobbled-mess, over the years they have added little additions on here and there, without having any idea what they are doing. lots of 1/2 gable additions and things of that sort. They have two gable ends facing the same direction and connectied with a flat section inbetween them.... Great idea, i know...

It is going to be hard to understand, but it leaks on the flat section of the roof. They would like me to "pitch" the flat section to help with water drainage. I was wondering what the best idea you "experts", nail benders, or bystanders have for doing this...did I mention the gables are different roof pitches.....ha to make it more intresting....the gables are even the same height...you give a farmer a hammer and you see what they do with it...=)

A gable roof running across between the two gables going the opposite direction would solve that problem. Like in this sketch:

good question, I used a local struct. engineer to help design the roof loadings. We ended up removing all the existing roofing and sheathing and sistered the existing rafters with larger 2" lumber and a strongback to the inside of the rafters. We than framed the roof additions using 2"x12" lumber and it turned out better than I even thought. Next time I am there I'll have to take some pictures, The job is 200 miles north of our place and we rarely get there if not a holiday.
