Let me preface this by saying I have done plenty of framing although it has been awhile since I did it for a living. I am now building a detached garage for myself and I cannot remember, if I ever have, how to notch out my bottom plate where my 5/8' j bolt, 3"x3" square washer and nut come out of my mud sill. I am building on a 2' stem wall with a 12' framed wall on top of it. Can I get away with kerfing out my bottom plate for the square washer and then drilling out where the J bolt and nut come up? Should I try to seat the washer into the mud sill? Any suggestions?

are you using the sole plate(attached to concrete) for your bottom plate of your stud wall??

if you are, what does is hurt if the washer and bolts are above the sill plates.

if you are planning on using another bottom plate for your stud wall, you can notch the bottom plate of the stud wall to accomadate the j-bolts....

or if code agrees, use a bottom plate strap, instead of bolts...

What is a 3"x3" square washer? Even if there is such a washer, you drill your plate and the washer goes on top of the sill like a normal washer does for any sill. Unless there's some code where your from that says different.

Bighammer- I am using another bottom plate for my stud wall, and I can notch out for the bolt and nut easy enough but it is the large square washer that makes it such a pain. I am wondering if anyone has a technique for notching out that stud wall bottom plate.

Joe- The 3x3 square washer is used on J bolts for these 14' walls but I need to notch out the bottom plate of the stud wall that sits on top of the mud sill that is bolted down. I'm not putting it under the mud sill.

Drill a hole for the bolts and then just take your saw set the depth of the blade a little thicker than the washer and slide it back and forth on the bottom of the plate for the washer. It's simple with the saw.
