Hey,
This is my first time here so this may have already been gone over. I could use so help. I am building a 12'X12' kitchen deck and would like to put a hip roof over it. I have never framed a roof much less a hip. I would appreciate it if someone could give me info on how to frame this roof. I plan to have an 18" over hang and to roof it with metal roofing.
Thanks Jay

Joe Carola knows that, plus Rich and/or Don,a and even bighammer might. Basically, you need to erect four hip rafters, and then cut all the rest of the rafters, each of which will be different in each triangle. Making that compound cut has always been a source of wonder to me....one guy up there yells down a measurement, and the other guy down below goes zing zing with the saw and tosses it up, and the damn thing FITS!! Don't ask ME how they do it. =)

This might be worth thinking about hiring out but, Is this laying onto the existing roof? If so what is it's pitch? What is the desired pitch of the new roof? Are the top plates that the rafters sit on 12'x12' outside to outside measure?

If you lived in Iowa I'd give you my number, the job at hand requires more than a basic knowledge of cutting roofs. I recently did a self supportive hip roof, It was fun, but difficult.
To help you we need more information as posted above
fyi, I posted a picture of that job in an earlier thread

We might want to play with the plate height if you are trying to get things to line up with existing. Planning prior will probably work best if you can.

Hey Don,
This roof will actually be free standing away from the main house.
