I think you should research the interlocking Stones. if it's the look you don't like have a paving contractor (if your in the Denver metro area call me) there are some great precast wall blocks the mirror natural stone and well cost you a lot less. With precast and depending on what needs to be taking out around $45.00 a face foot (make sure you or your contractor follows the one up 1/2 down rule.) I know this wall isn't retaining but it really looks nice and for the most part is easy to install

If it is a DIY job, the interlocking or Segmental Retaining Wall Units (SRWs) will be cheaper in the end. No concrete footings are used or permitted; the block can be used on both inside and outside curves and they can easily be adjusted for elevation changes.

Check out some of the sites for the national or internationally licensed products such as Allan Block, Anchor Wall Systems, Keystone and VersaLok. They have some great photos of applications , technical support and installation.

If you wall height is less the a specific height no engineering is required for permits(if required). I have seen single walls up to 40' high, so they can also be engineering for tough applications.
