I want to build a house with a 5/12 hip roof with a intersecting hip and valley on one side. How do you set the ceiling joists around the valley. Correct me if I wrong, but because of the low slope of a 5/12 won't the joists around the valley hit it and prevent the joist from being able to rest on the top plate? How is this typically dealt with? Also, if your supposed to nail rafter ends to ceiling joists, then do you lay out your rafters to accomodate joists or joists to rafters. Hope this is not too unclear. I would appreciate any help anyone might have.

wow, nothing like jumping right in with both feet, eh? from one forum newbie to another, maybe i can answer some of your questions. The ceiling joists (CJs) often do hit a valley and prevent it from being placed in it's proper location. Because i don't know the specifics about your application, I will describe general ideas for a solution.
The first option that comes to my mind is to nail a header made with the same heighth of lumber between the two neighboring CJs at a point far enough away from the valley corner that the valley rafter clears it. Then run the interfering CJ to that header.
In other words, you cut the CJ shorter so that it wont touch the valley rafter then, rather than being supported by the top plate of the wall, it is supported by a perpendicular joist that is nailed between the rafters next to it.
Regarding the rafter/CJ connection, the CJ typically sits on the top plate beside the rafter, notdirectly below it so there is no need for one to accomodate the other. That being said, any part of the CJ that sits above the top plane of the rafter needs to be cut off as to not interfere with the roof sheathing.
I hope i understood your questions correctly and hope this helps.

Thanks for the response on the first question. I suspected that was how it was delt with but was'nt sure. As for the second I think I did a poor job expaining myself. Let me try again. Where the end of a rafter and a ceiling meet on the top plate. Is'nt the ceiling joist supost to be face nailed to the rafter. If so, then does'nt the joist layout dictate the rater location? Does this present a problem where the rafters meet the ridge hips and valleys? Hope this cleared thing up.
