I was wondering what type of roof do you all recommend. I think a shed roof would be the simpliest. Here are a few pictures.

What region of the country are you located in?
Adding in the corner of an ell is a very difficult proposition. You'll see that when you start trying to lay out a roof which will fit under the second floor window sill by at least 6 inches, and then intersect the one-story roof on the right.

I live in north carolina. I have installed gutters to catch the rain water off both of these roofs. So a simple shed roof to me would be the simpliest solution I think.

Wait until you try to work out exactly what happens HERE:

The gutters on the low roof won't help any more. I also wonder if you can get enough slope on the patio roof. I think you may be getting close to or below the 3 on 12 minimum for shingles.
The result will be more like this:

Using the "go advanced" tab and putting pictures in the forum gallery does 2 things. It stands a better chance of not having a dead link to pics later and it avoids popups on viewer's computers :).

I think one of my 2 big concerns is, so I need to remove the roof below the my upstairs window and how do I tie the new roof to the other roof? It seems like I will have to angle it towards my other roof. How much do you think this may cost. The last quote I got was around $5,000, too much for me at this time. I have around 1500.

is there any special consideration to put a hip on this shed roof. I have a roofing contractor coming to fix this roof. He is going to raise it up and extend the hip on my roof above this flat roof.
