We're thinking of covering an area of 30' x 30' and only using 4 posts. Would this be possible? We're located in Southern California, so the snow factor is zilch. Thinking of using 6 x 6 steel tubing 1/2" wall in about a 30" x 30" footing dug 72" deep. Then welding saddles on the four posts to accommodate glu lams 5 1/8" x 16 1/2" by about 29 feet long.

Anyone care to come over and help me put a roof on this?

While snow loads are not a problem it will have to be engineered for wind loads that not only create large lateral loads but signifigant uplift loads as well. I am assuming this is an open structure! If it is not designed for these loads you may find it on the ground one morning or, perhaps, the next county! Be prepared to spend a little money on some professional engineer services.

Thanks for the response... We're having a couple of people look at our sketches to see if it can even be done. Yes, it is an open structure, not attached to anything, just covering a portion of our yard. We'd like as FEW upright pillars as possible as to not obstruct views. I've got a welder lined up, access to the yard for lift/boom and some prices on the material. If I can find a local "reasonable" s/engineer to take on this task, we just may go for it...

Can you send a picture of this? I would prefer a wood stucture if I was doing it. It's a little heavier than a metal structure maybe a little cheaper not for sure though. But it might require more maintenance:(
